mat chivers selected work media bio contact | -- -- migration 2018 impactite & unfired clay 6.8 m x 9.3 m x 1.7 m installation view at musée d'art de joliette, canada for hundreds of thousands of years, human beings have made tools, and those tools have shaped us in return. the idea of extended cognition centres around the way thinking is something that happens in relationship with material reality - that thinking is an infinitely complex network of processes that radiate back and forth from the wetware of the brain through the physiology of the sensorial body and into the world of animate and inanimate form, fusing organic and inorganic in a web of reciprocity. we instinctively knead a ball of clay in our hand - squeezing it, turning it and repeating time and again in order to know it. in grasping this primary material we experience the functional action of the hand that has allowed us to shape our world entering the darkened space, the viewer sees two sculptural elements framed by sharp directional light from above. 1,480 unfired clay hand imprints are arrayed in a grid on a low plinth. each unique imprint was made by individuals grasping a piece of raw clay using either their left or right hand. together they form a culture or society of objects. each of the imprints were digitally scanned and the scans were used to train an artificial intelligence (ai) built specifically for the project, to understand what forms are created when we grasp a piece of clay. the ai then made its own form based on this learning, creating a file that was used to program a 5-axis milling robot to cut the shape of its own imagined hand imprint into stone. the resulting 2.6 ton sculptural form is a composite object made from multiple pieces of a type of stone known as impactite - created when a meteorite struck québec 350,000,000 years ago. the energy released by the force of the impact was 60,000,000 times more than the atomic bomb at hiroshima, and liquified the crust of the earth, reforming as impactite. the use of impactite alludes to the impact that ai is already having and will continue to have on our species and others migration signals one of the first times that an ai has been used to generate a three dimensional form derived from machine learning. the ai has created the impression of a hand although it has no physical hand itself. the use of material from québec - raw clay from mont saint-hilaire and impactite from cap-aux-oies - locates the local technological revolution out into the wider non-human ecology. the story of deep-time human evolution and the current state of ai technology are brought into counterpoint in an attempt to imagine what the migration of consciousness across material boundaries - from carbon based lifeforms to something other - feels like right now installation view at musée d'art de joliette, canada le rêve 2018 looped single channel video installation with french and english audio versions 11 min duration each for a period of time a spoken narrative is heard with the screen in blackness, then an image snaps sharply into view. framed at centre is the phare de haut-fond prince - an isolated lighthouse built on a notorious reef, 7 kilometres off the coast of tadoussac, québec. the sun drops behind the mountains of the côte nord in the distance, as the camera makes one single turn around the iconic structure over the course of the film, the narrator invokes a vision that spans the range of the human sensorial body - recounting physical experiences of sound, sight, taste, scent and touch. part way through, the dialogue shifts and metamorphoses between moments in time - past, present and future - alluding to the events that led to the emergence of sentient ai and the after-effects of singularity. the spoken words locate a woman and a man in the lighthouse seen onscreen. in an altered state of consciousness, they engage in a ritualised and compulsive act of making as a way to understand what it is to be human - actively re-shaping their neurology in the process lighthouses facilitate safe navigation by warning voyagers of hazards ahead - they are reminders that we should proceed with full attention. maybe what is most interesting about this moment of unprecedented technological change and evolutionary shift is the potential that it offers us to consider what it is about being human that we value installation view at musée d'art de joliette, canada private collection private collection migration 2018 2 x drawings, carbon on paper 1.53 m x 1.23 m each the swallow is a widespread bird species, found on six of the seven continents. it has been recognised by numerous cultures as a symbol for the phenomena of migration, and its annual passage between the northern and southern hemisphere was, and still is a thing of wonder, leading to its association with the idea of transition between states of being in a tradition dating back hundreds of years, before embarking on a voyage from which there was no certain return, mariners would be tattooed with a swallow on one side of their chest - on their return, another was tattooed on the opposite side one drawing of a swallow in flight was made using the right hand and another mirrored version, using the left hand. working in diptych, the drawings articulate the correspondence between the north and south hemispheres of the earth, the left and right hemispheres of the brain, and the action of thinking out through the body and into the world through engagement with materiality self portrait using left hand to draw right and right to draw left carbon on paper 1.6 m x 1.3 m carbon mirror 2 x drawings, carbon on paper 76 cm x 56 cm each carbon mirror 2 x drawings, carbon on paper 76 cm x 56 cm each carbon mirror 2 x drawings, carbon on paper 76 cm x 56 cm each carbon mirror 2 x drawings, carbon on paper 76 cm x 56 cm each carbon mirror 2 x drawings, carbon on paper 76 cm x 56 cm each carbon mirror 2 x drawings, carbon on paper 76 cm x 56 cm each carbon mirror 2 x drawings, carbon on paper 76 cm x 56 cm each carbon mirror 2017 2 x drawings, carbon on paper 76 cm x 56 cm each i started to make drawings of my hand as a reaction to my experience of developing a previous body of work that needed intensive digital engagement. that process had a physical effect on my body and on my psychological state that made me question why i make things. i spent most of my time on skype or telephone calls, in front of a computer sending emails and live-chats with collaborators. what is it about physical involvement with materials that is so pleasurable, so fulfilling? drawing from life seems to have an un-usual intensity, a meditation on form in an altered state of consciousness. using my right hand to draw my left and my left hand to draw my right, i became entranced by the complexity of the hand, in how the relationships between the thumb, palm and fingers allow us to interact with the world in such subtle and diverse ways. in 'how things shape the mind', lambros malafouris articulates the idea that physical engagement with material reality is an act of extended cognition - of thinking out into the world. grasping; caressing; poking; comforting; pressing; scooping; picking; cupping; weighing; grabbing; sifting; twisting; pinching; testing - the actions are almost endless and the multitude of human-built forms that populate the world stand as testament to the capabilities of the hand. the hand enables the mind to manifest on the three-dimensional plane in 'hands', darian leader observes: 'it seems as if almost every science-fiction, espionage and adventure film contains a scene where the protagonists have to override a computer manually. the sheer frequency of this motif suggests that it touches on something profound for us. we could interpret it as simply human unease about the power that machines have over us, but isn't it also an attempt to sustain the belief in the hand as agency, as the point of ultimate control?' the evol
